The Monongahela River snakes leisurely through a mere 130 miles of the Allegheny Plateau in West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania. The terrain is complex, with lovely deep forests punctuated by steep hills and slopes.

The Monongahela’s rich history reaches back to the Ice Age, filling this country’s pre-history and early heritage as a major passageway and site of historic events. Today, this navigable river offers kayaking and rafting opportunities. To live near a waterway with so much beauty and history is only a dream to many; but for those who live in Lincoln, Pennsylvania, the Monongahela is just another piece of the breathtaking landscape they call home.

Hardwoods make autumn in Lincoln especially beautiful, and the close proximity to Pittsburgh gives it an allure that big cities simply do not have. With easy access to the facilities of the city, Lincoln remains a quiet, peaceful little burg nestled in the deep-woods forests where the Monongahela slips gently along.

This beautiful waterway has survived having been a major industrial shipping thoroughfare, home to a shipbuilding industry, and transportation highway for ironworks, steel mills and coal. Studded with locks and dams to facilitate towing, the Monongahela has been called a “river of sweat,” and lives have been lost on it banks over industrial issues.

Today, the steel industry has gone to rust in that province, but industrial parks and recreational activities are blossoming on this river. Going home to the Monongahela is most inviting.Related Article : Bald eagle chick first born in Pittsburgh in more than 200 years, experts say
